A forex bonus can look like free trading capital, cashback, or a valuable prize. The real value, however, depends on the conditions attached to it. A large headline percentage may be less useful than a smaller offer with clear withdrawal rules.
This guide explains the main bonus types, the terms that matter, and a practical checklist to use before depositing money.
Common types of forex promotions
Deposit bonus
The broker adds bonus credit after a qualifying deposit. The credit may increase available margin but is often not directly withdrawable. Removing funds may cancel some or all of the bonus.
No-deposit bonus
The broker provides a small amount without an initial deposit. Profit withdrawals often require identity verification, a minimum trading volume, a time limit, and sometimes a qualifying deposit.
Cashback or rebate
A portion of the spread or commission is returned after eligible trades. Compare the rebate with the broker’s underlying trading costs; a high rebate does not automatically mean lower net costs.
Interest or return on free margin
Some programs calculate a return on unused account margin. Read the formula carefully because the displayed percentage may be annualised and converted into a much smaller daily amount. See our HFM Return on Free Margin example.
Trading contest or prize draw
Eligibility may depend on volume, profitability, account type, country, or minimum deposit. Check whether prizes are cash, withdrawable credit, physical goods, or bonus funds with further restrictions.
Eight terms to check before joining
- Eligible legal entity and country: confirm which company will hold your account and whether the offer is available in your jurisdiction.
- Regulation: verify the licence on the regulator’s own register, not only on the broker’s marketing page.
- Minimum deposit: never deposit more than you can afford to lose merely to unlock a promotion.
- Trading-volume requirement: calculate the required lots and the approximate spread or commission cost needed to complete them.
- Withdrawal rules: check whether withdrawing your deposit cancels the bonus or open positions.
- Expiry: identify when the offer, bonus credit, and volume-counting period end.
- Excluded trading methods: bonuses may exclude hedging, arbitrage, very short trades, copy trading, EAs, or multiple accounts.
- Maximum benefit: headline percentages frequently have a cash or credit cap.
How to calculate the real cost
Suppose a bonus requires 50 standard lots before profit can be withdrawn. If the average all-in trading cost is $8 per lot, the approximate transaction cost could reach $400 before slippage or financing charges:
50 lots × $8 estimated cost per lot = $400
This does not mean every promotion is poor value. It means the bonus must be compared with the cost and risk required to unlock it.
Red flags
- Guaranteed or unusually high profits.
- No clear legal entity, licence number, or regulator.
- Terms that are unavailable before registration.
- Pressure to deposit immediately or send cryptocurrency to an individual wallet.
- A demand for new fees, taxes, or additional deposits before releasing your existing funds.
- Withdrawal rules that can be changed without any accessible record.
- Support that communicates only through private messaging apps.
Regulators have repeatedly warned that leveraged forex and CFD trading can produce substantial losses. They also warn about unregistered dealers that delay withdrawals or demand additional payments.
A five-minute bonus checklist
- Open the broker’s official terms and save a copy.
- Write down the legal entity, regulator, expiry, and eligible country.
- Calculate the required volume and estimated trading cost.
- Check whether the bonus itself and any profits can be withdrawn.
- Test customer support and start with a small withdrawal before committing more capital.
Should you accept a forex bonus?
A promotion is useful only when it fits trading you already planned to do, the broker is appropriate for your jurisdiction, and the conditions are clear. Do not increase leverage, deposit size, or trading frequency solely to reach a reward.
